Now that the new year has begun a lot of new brokerage promotions have popped up to get people to open a new account. The Dow Jones is hovering around 10,000 so we are still a little off of the high from 2 years ago. If you have some extra cash to invest, now is the time to get it working for you.

$50 Tradeking Promo Is Back! October 2009

Tradeking is once again having it’s annual Tradeking Promo where you can get $50 when opening a brokerage account. To qualify for the promotion you need to do the following:

Open a new brokerage account by using the following link –
Fund the account with $2,500 or more within 30 days of account opening
Execute any one trade within 180 days of account opening
NOTE: $2,500 must remain in the account (minus any trading losses) for a minimum of 6 months or the credit may be surrendered

This tradeking bonus ends on October 31st, so be sure to open your account by then! So if you are on the fence about opening an account, getting $50 for free should seal the deal.

For those of you that are not familiar with Tradeking, they offer a flat $4.95 commission on stocks and options. Tradeking was founded in 2005 by the founders of Suretrade.com which was eventually sold to TDAmeritrade. All accounts are SIPC protected, so you can be sure that your money is safe. I’ve had a Tradeking account since 2006 and use it as my primary trading account. Why spend $10 or more for a stock commission with the other guys when Tradeking offers the same service for half as much! There are no account minimums or inactivity fees. (note that in this special case to qualify for the Tradeking Promotion there is a $2500 minimum to get the free $50 but once the 6 months is up, there is no minimum balance). Some other cool features they offer is an ACH feature where you can move money in and out of your linked checking account. There is also a money market sweep that invests your uninvested money in a money market account that earns interest. They also offer loads of educational material to help you understand the basics of investing with stocks and options in case you are just starting out. I learned how to trade options with Tradeking very quickly using their helpful training tools.

You can also send them any paper stock certificates you have to them and they will add them to your account for free. I had to use this feature once with a stock purchase plan I had for a company I worked at. It was a very simple process and I was able to trade those stocks electronically in less than 2 weeks.

Unfortunetly they weren’t covering the transfer fees at that time, but it was still worth it to me. Their account transfer process is very simple. All I needed to do was open a new account, complete the transform and fax it in. My account was transfered in less than a week. To get your account transfer fees refunded, faxing a copy of your account statement with proof of the transfer charge to 561.988.0131. The credit will be deposited to your account within 30 days of receipt of evidence of charge. Very easy! From an over all service standpoint, please read see my Tradeking Review. Like I have said in earlier posts I have been very happy with Tradeking and the services they offer. I am in no way a day trader, but for what I need, they can do. They’ve got one of the lowest fee schedules in the business, so if you are itching to get in and buy in a down market, now is the time. And with up to $150 in transfer fees refuneded, this makes it that much easier to switch.

The $50 Tradeking Promo ends Sunday November 30th. Get in this week if you haven’t done so already. Tradeking Promos tend to only appear every so often, so there is no telling when another may happen. Besides if you haven’t started trading is this down market shame on you! Tradeking is the only brokerage account I use. Let’s face it, I don’t have a whole lot of money to invest, so you can be pretty sure I am not going to waste in on high commissions like at other online brokerages. Tradeking’s $4.95 commission suits me just fine and there is nothing that I have wanted to buy that I could not do on Tradeking.

One feature that I thought was pretty neat is that when my last company had a stock employee purchase plan my company actually issued me stock certificates. I was like, “What the heck am I supposed to do with these?”. Well after talking with Tradeking they told me that they would take the certificates from me for free. And sure enough after a week, the shares appeared in my online brokerage account for me to sell or do whatever I wanted with them. It is those little customer service things that keep me coming back!!

Due to the overwhelming response to Tradeking’s current promotion of a $50 bonus when opening a new account, they have decided to extend the promo through the end of November. This means that when you open an account with $2500 and make your first trade prior to November 31st, Tradeking will deposit a $50 bonus into your account.

It seems that people are starting to realize that now is the time to get back into the market since all the major averages are still down. If you are a casual investor like myself, Tradeking is a great way to invest as their commisions are some of the lowest out there at $4.95 per trade.

Tradeking.com is currently running a promotion of a $50 bonus when opening a new account ends ~~Friday October 31st~~ Sunday November 30th. When you open an account with $2500 and make your first trade, Tradeking will deposit a $50 bonus into your account.

With their trades costing $4.95 that is more than 10 free trades to get you going. In the long term the $4.95 commission will save you lots of money on commissions and fees when compared to other online brokerates.

Tradeking only has a few promotions a year so once the $50 Tradeking bonus is gone I imagine you won’t see another until sometime next year. So if you are looking to start investing in a market where almost everything is a buy, get in before ~~Friday~~ November 30th!

Tradeking Review October 2008

A few of you responding to the Tradeking Promo post have a requested a more in depth review of Tradeking. Here is what I have put together from my experiences with them over the past 2 years.

Tradeking was founded in December 2005. TradeKing’s founders include the original management team from SureTrade Inc. I used to use SureTrade prior to them being sold to Quick & Reilly. SureTrade back then was a pioneer in cheaper trades. I remember they offered all trades for $7.95. This alone was enough to make me feel secure about their operation. Anyone can create a online brokerage site, but to have spun off a successful discount brokerage site in the past, that makes me secure in giving them my money.

Commission and Fees:
Tradeking has one of the lowest commissions for an online stock broker out there. All trades are $4.95. This includes limit orders as well. A few brokers out there charge extra for limit orders, which is what most people use, so it is nice to see Tradeking have one flat fee for all trades. Stock Options are $4.95 plus $.65 for each option contract. So for example if you bought or sold 2 option contract2 it would cost you $6.25 ( $4.95 + 2 ($.65)). There are no minimum opening balances, and also no maintenance or inactivity fees to worry about, another difference between them and places like Etrade which hit you with an inactivity fee every quarter.

Dividend Reinvestment:
This is another service that differentiates Tradeking from the other guys. They offer free automatic dividend reinvestment, with the ability to purchase fractional shares. If you are a dividend investor you can see the value here. No more trying to find a place to invest that dividend. Just role it back into the same stock for free. The setting is configurable for all your stock holdings, or just specific ones.

They offer a few ways to contact their customer service department.

I only had to contact their service department one time, which I did via telephone and was speaking to an agent in less than 4 minutes. TradeKing ranked fourth out of 12 firms, ahead of E*Trade , OptionsHouse, and TD Ameritrade, and significantly higher than OptionsXpress and Scottrade in a review of online brokers’ customer service centers performed by Kiplinger and ranked #1 by SmartMoney.

Automated Funds Transfer:
Tradeking allows you to link up a checking account to transfer money in and out of your account via ACH deposits and withdrawals. One thing to note is that ACH deposits are subject to a trading hold of 5 business days and cannot be withdrawn for 10 business days.

Trading Interface:
Tradekings menu’s and Trading Interface is very straightforward and very responsive. I have read many reviews of people complaining about trade lag time, but I have yet to experience this in the long while I have been using my account. I am an avid options trader and their options trading interface is one of the simpler interfaces I have seen which is good for the beginning option trader.

Cash Account:
Like all online brokers, uninvested money in your account earns minimal interest. Tradeking has a Money Market sweep option that will get you earning around 1% (this will change based on market conditions) interest. All you need to do is email them after you open an account asking them to enable the money market sweep for your account. When I signed up for the account 2 years ago the rate was at 4%, so it will move with the market.

Overall Tradeking has served me well and I am very happy with the service. Short of the long transfer times for new deposits, Tradeking gives me everything I need to be a successful investor. I definetly recomend them to anyone looking to start investing online. And with all the cheap stocks available today, now is definetly the time to get going!

Tradeking is by far the cheapeast full service online brokerage that I reccomend. They have limit and market orders for $4.95 per trade. Not many places can do better than that with the level of customer service that they provide. (Check out Kiplinger’s review of their customer service). The founders of Tradeking were also the founders of Suretrade.com, which was eventually purchased by Ameritrade, so they definetly know what they are doing.

I have had my account with Tradeking for about 2 years now with out any complaints. I have recently decided to start investing harder since everything is at such a low price, and I am hoping that the bail out plan will get stocks moving upwards again. Here’s to making some easy money! I hope!
