2009 Tax Stimulus Rebate a Reality?

September 23, 2008

EDIT: Do you qualify for the 2008 Recovery Rebate? Find out HERE.

I have a little update on anther 2009 Tax Stimulus Rebate. As part of the multi trillion dollar bail out that the government is putting together to deal with mortgage / housing crisis, lawmakers have proposed building in another Tax Stimulus Rebate to help spur consumer spending. They are referring to this as Son of Stimulus. There is still no final decision or details as to how much the rebate would give each of us, but as details emerge I will let you know.

nullIn other tax rebate related talk, Barack Obama, as part of his campaigning, is proposing that Americans receive another tax rebate. This time you would see $1000 to help offset the rising price of gasoline and to spur spending. How will this be paid for you ask? His idea is to get it from a tax on the oil company profits. Obviously since Barack is using this as a campaign tactic this could take months even if he takes office in January. I have a feeling we will see something sooner from Bush to give the republican campaign a little shot in the arm.

Will the 2009 Tax Stimulus Rebate be a reality? Only time will tell, but at the rate the economy is sinking I am definitely optimistic.

I hope they do another rebate. I am barely scraping by with the current increases in gas and food prices. I just hope they don’t further screw the economy by putting us further into debt.

AMEN!!!!! We are having the same problems. So now we have a roomate :( I sucks bc I just got married

It would be nice if the goverment would send another round of stimulus checks before christmas, that would boost the economy up 100 %
    %

  4. billy hendrickson on October 24th, 2008 9:31 pm

if we do get another check i hope it comes before christmas

  5. andy on October 26th, 2008 10:12 pm

i hope we do get another stimulus check.i know me and my family sure could use it

  6. Sue on October 27th, 2008 4:47 pm

Checks are nice , but I wish the government would go get our jobs back from the other countries that were allowed to stimulate their nation with.

  7. Julie on November 6th, 2008 12:18 pm

I could sure use a stimulus here at Christmas. Looks like my kids are going to have to have a IOU cuz even the Salvation Army cannot help too many families this year.

  8. TIFFANY on November 17th, 2008 3:23 am

I THINK GETTING ANOTHER STIMILUS WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL IF WE UTILIZE IT THE RIGHT WAY.CHRISTMAS SHOULD NOT BE AN OBLIGATION SO MUCH BUT GETTING YOURSELF CAUGHT UP ON EVERY MONTH BILLS INSTEAD OF SOMETHING THAT LAST ONLY ONE DAY SHOULD BE AN OBLIGATION.CHRISTMAS ONLY LAST ON E DAY,BUT THE BILL WHICH RESULT FROM THAT CAN LAST A YEAR OR MORE.(I ALSO AGREE WITH ABOVE COMMENT FROM SUE)

  9. Jane on November 21st, 2008 8:36 am

I agree with getting another stimulus rebate. It needs to be at least $1,500 per person in order to make a difference in the economy. Any less than that, people will pay off bills and not have much left over to do anything else! What did the $600 do for anybody?? Did it help the economy?

  10. Leticia on November 23rd, 2008 9:10 pm

I hope that a stimulus check does go out, I need it to help buy a newer vehicle. The one I have now is 13 yrs old. With the way the economy has been my family and I have had to move in with my father-in-law. Believe me it is no picnic living with him.lol Even so, just this month my husband was layed off due to a company buy out and they did it just before x-mas. No one seems to have compassion anymore not even around the holidays.

  11. sovan on November 29th, 2008 5:26 am

hell i agree with everyone comment
i say if they can give the bank like billions of dollars why can’t they just give us like 5 grand a person
that will make a diffrent in the economy its a done deal
    well it just my opnion

  12. sandi k on November 30th, 2008 6:14 pm

If and when we do get another stimulus, I agree we need a higher sum than 600 per person. The heating bill runs pretty close to that in the winter, so that leaves not much more to work with .

MY WIFE AND I NEED HELP LIKE ALL THESE OTHER REPORTS

  14. marcia on December 4th, 2008 4:57 am

Rebates while they may or maynot be helpful, in my opion seem to be aimed alittle wrong. Last year I made $891 due to alot of business losses when my business failed. I still owe alittle which will start me in 2009 finally clear. However I did not QUALIFY for a rebate because amount of money I made..Excuse me $891 yeah that is alot of money and I probably couldn’t have used alittle help????? I hope if this is true I qualify for the next one.

  15. Jaline on December 4th, 2008 12:56 pm

Another check would be nice. I have my own business and live in Galveston, Texas, we are still recovering from Hurricane Ike and some extra cash would help out here for sure. However like a few of the comments above a small 600 dollars pays bills, and they want us to spend the money to boost the economy then we need alot more than 600. I think they should give everyone that files for a check at least a grand and those that have families should get 1 grand per child. The cost of everything now days is too high to live. They may have lowered the gas prices ***THANK GOD*** but the cost of everything else is extremely high and the government wonders why the economy dont spend money!!! This is why I believe that everyone should get at least a grand and none of this you don’t qualify, because I know a few people who did not get one.

    ***LOWER PRICES***
    ***GRAND PER PERSON***
    ***GRAND PER CHILD***
    ***EVERYONE QUALIFIES***
    ***MORE OPPORTUNITY TO SPEND***

  16. Hana on December 9th, 2008 12:35 am

$600 for a single person wont cut anything these days! As soon as I go food shopping, I’m spening without even knowing it at least $150 to $200 easy! Then After that is spent, the rest will go to bills, not the economy, sorry to say, but if I give to the economy, what am I going to have left? ZERO! That’s right people, ZERO! I can’t pay my bills get food for myself and do shopping to boost the economy all at once! If you’re gonna give money, give money! Give at least to single people 2000 just so we can say, WOW now I feel comfortable enough to help my economy out! It’s only gonna get harder and harder! With this little amount of money it’ll only get worse! The car dealerships don’t need all that money, they’re sitting on billions as it is! WE THE PEOPLE need help, and lots of it! We are all losing our jobs and have rent to pay and bills etc…ect… and with a little bit of $600 is not going to do anybody justice! The car markers will have to go under, because guess what, my little $600, (if that’s what they are giving the single people) will not go on a down payment on a car! It will be going in my pocket, and it will be saved! I will go broke if I spend that little bit of money very, very fast! If you’re going to send money out, send it out like you really wanna help the economy, not break it even more! Give, please WE ALL NEED IT VERY BAD!

  17. cheryl on December 10th, 2008 1:19 pm

It really would be nice to receive another stimulus check. It will help many families catch up, it would help families with Christmas, it will also help families that are caught up, have a little something to set aside for a rainy day.

  18. Alvina Privett on December 11th, 2008 12:47 am

I hope we will get another rebate check. I was in a real bad wreck and it put me back really bad. I’m still in debt over it, I lost a lot of work and this check will help out a lot.

man they aint giving us anything for get it.when are americans gonna learn its all talk to get what they want.

  20. Robin Lynn on December 12th, 2008 11:07 am

Economic Stimulus payments is a short term fix for a long term problem. We all want and need it but unless its a sufficient amount it wont help the economy. The government has the money to help us help themselves!

  21. Alex on December 12th, 2008 2:58 pm

i think people (AMERICANS) should stop waiting and starte doing turn of your cell phone even if you have to pay the diconect fee and save 300 or 400 hundred dollers turn of the cable for a while and have that extra cash for christmas and then reactivate it once u actually have money to splerge turn off the internet if its something u only use to write emails and surf, save those couple of bucks a week instead of going to some fast food place and making them richer give more to charitys at the end of the year its a tax write off donate to the red cross for another tax write off it cost nothing to u to just give away old clothes and toys stop useing your car just to go around the corner to pick up some milk

starte realizing the mess were inn now and think if its bad now what it might look like in one year if things dont change hey! no one has to listen to no one but at least consider that some of us know through experience we can make our finacial situation better all it takes is commtment and integrity as AMERICANS stop looking to the government for answers remember we the people put them there they should be looking to us for answeres……………………………………………….

  23. jackie on December 12th, 2008 10:25 pm

The last stimulus check, my husband and I used at least 1/2 of it on new windows for our house. We did buy a 42 in flat screen, and put food in the freezer.

IF they do a stimulus check in 2009, we will be replacing a two more windows in our house, finishing the addition (electrical and drywall) we started three years ago, a new fridge, and a PS3.

We have custody of our one granddaughter, so that money will come in handy to purchase new clothes for her as well as ourselves.

If my calculations are right with the refund and the stimulus check, we will be able to all that and maybe finally take a honeymoon that we did not take when we got married 12 yrs ago.

  24. jeremy on December 17th, 2008 6:58 pm

I do agree with most the ideas stated in the statements above. However, does anyone ever use spell check. One of the statements above is unreal for the mistakes. You really lose any real creditibility when you can’t spell the word OFF. I am not even close to being a good speller or proper grammer but come on.

And on another note. Why would I shut the cable, internet, and cell phone off and pay early termination fees and then donate more at the end of the year. That makes absolutely no sense at all.

  25. RDAJ on December 19th, 2008 10:04 pm

Unlike Jeremy above me who has no concept of money or taxes if he does not understand the concept of a deductable contribution. I agree that a stimulus package is definately in need but really, $1000 – $2000 – $3000 is not going to make a difference. It needs to be a long term stimulus such as reduce the 33% in takes we pay a year to 15% there is another $30,000 a year back in my pocket. I am sorry but $600 to $1500 dollars per person is not enough money to spend. Or what about the $40,000 I lost in my 401k….. Where do I apply for my bailout? Alex ir right get rid of the the expenses that are not needs and most of the americans would not be in trouble. Or better forget the bank bailouts and wipe americas credit card debt clean? A long term fix must be assessed.

  26. Andrea on December 21st, 2008 8:29 pm

I agree with ALL of you! We all need the stimulas check and a heck of alot more than $600!!!! My husband just got laid off, and I am a stay at home mom of 4 kids, since it is not worth working and having to pay for day care. We are strapped for money and having faith in God that our bills get paid. I know the $600 would not even cover our rent for a month. If they can give billions to AIG than they can give us ALL at leasr $5,000 to help us feel secure enouph to get our bills paid up and go out there and spend some money to help the economy. I know personally I would get my bills paid a month in advance, bank some and take a little and get my kids some new clothes and stuff that they need. I think our new president has a good head on his shoulder and God elects all government officials and Obama was choosen by God and I believe he will make a huge turn around. It may take some time and is not going to happen overnight but he is in office for a reason. I want to wish everyone a blessed Christmas and Happy New Year!! Keep your heads up and hand it over to the Lord. He will take care of you!

  27. sandy on December 23rd, 2008 12:07 am

If every adult put even 1/4th of the stimulus on spending it would make an impact.another 1/4th on bills. Then the number of bailouts would be reduced. The other 1/2 is up to the comsumer. Think about that one. Yes we need a second stimulus check to move the economy and Wall Street. Sandy

  28. Diana on December 30th, 2008 11:18 pm

Seems to me if there wasn’t sooooooo much greed out there we wouldn’t be in this fix. There is always a high dollar fee for just about everything. Late on your bill, ok that will be an extra $ 20.00 fee, overdraft that will be another $20.00 fee, etc. How can people get ahead, when companies are always figuring out new ways to charge people for anything that comes to their minds. Every time you turn around there’s a charge for this and that. Things that use to be FREE!!! You go to the grocery store and you are paying more and getting less. The gas prices that went so high this year, now it’s down almost $2.50 a gallon, seems like there is something the wrong with this picture. We the people are kept suppressed by this kind of business. Even if they gave us all a $10,000.00 check, it would only be a drop in the bucket.

  29. Taka on December 31st, 2008 1:29 am

I think everyone here is blind sighted from the fact that their getting free money.
What should be done with that money is to invest it into business’ so they can start hiring people again. with 1000 dollars theres only so much you can do until the bills start piling up again.

  30. Joanne on December 31st, 2008 2:20 am

The only thing that makes the situation in this country even tolerabe is when I read things like this on the internet. “Son of Stimulus!” I mean come on! Right now it is one o’clock in the morning and I am up researching mortgages, loans, debt releif, food stamps! I don’t qualify for the food because I have a job!Probably tomorrow my phone will get cut off because I can’t pay the bill. And that will really suck because I have “the bundle” which includes my tv and internet. During Christmas I had to beg the electric company not to shut my lights out so that I could see my empty Christmas tree. I am a single mom with one child. I would greatly appreciate it if the IRS would double my tax return this year. “Son of Stimulus” they better send the daddy because he’s a real dead beat!!

  31. carol on December 31st, 2008 11:20 am

there are alot of people out there who lost there jobs and really need alot of help from the goverment right now. I think that the goverment if they decide to give the american people a stimulus check for 2009. should instead of giving all these loans to auto business, banks whoever ,should give the american people at least 40,000 for family. that way makes sense they could catch up on house payments, pay off cars, buy a car in the long run it would help everyone ., i know my house needs fixing and i just don’t have the money to buy right now. my husband lost his job and were just living on my income.

  32. john on December 31st, 2008 12:44 pm

i feel that a second rebate check should be included in the package along with everything as obama first intended. the entire package is necessary. How can a cabinet loaded with six and seven figure workers say we dont need one. Wait a minute! THATS IT! They need it far less than many

  33. kelly on January 1st, 2009 12:48 am

I see what you are all saying, the house needs fixin, the electric is getting cute off, and so on. TRY this… the place I was sworking, a home town restaruant, went out of business July due to economy. Well I have been unemployed since then. $87 a week yeah $87! I raise 4 children on that! Thank GOD I am going to school and am 2 classes from my degree, and THANKS to student loans I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO IT!
We NEED HELP! Over Christmas I had to barrow to pay my phone, cable and internet also the package deal, because I go to school online I HAD NO CHOICE! If I don’t finish school WELFARE is in my future.
I am just waiting every day to see if there are any updates on if we are getting a stimulus or not. FINGERS CROSSED Lord I could use it!!

  34. Bianca Walling on January 1st, 2009 7:08 pm

I agree with so many of you..I am 27 years old, married with 3 young kids…and me and my husband try to do what we can to make things work for our bills, family, needs and wants…(this comment is for Alex)yes you have to sacrifice to be able to make but every family sacrifices..some people dont have family where they are and cant get the help some normally can and some are single parents that need to have a cell phone because if anything happens to their child or they are working but looking for better opportunity, its a better way to contact you or even working two jobs so cant always be around a house phone need it..yes a cell phone is a luxury but in a way its not…now turning off the house phone would be more realistic because most americans work more long hours just to make it…plus you turn off the cell phone bill and you still have to come out of the cancellation fees and so on and so forth…now getting rid of cable…I agree its definitely not a need but a want..plus regular tv has so much more now then before..but my opinion..we all speculate just off of what a person wears or how they look but no one knows what debt the next person has and what SACRIFICES that person or people have to make to pay bills AND take care of their families..we have to buy school uniforms and supplies and field trips and so on so forth with 2 of the 3 kids..not to mention daycare for all three of the kids but we work long crazy hours to pay our bills. A stimulous check would work for our nation and these business that are going in debt are also the same business that help give donations to charities that help less fortunate families so its a lose lose situation. But if you have ever volunteered to help people that are less fortunate at some of these organizations that assist with low income families, you began to realize just how blessed you really are. I volunteered to help an organization that helped us some years back and it felt so good to give back even if it was my time..I suggest everyone do it…it will help our economy grow stronger by helping each other. Our economy isnt what it use to be and we use to be able give money to less fortunate people that we see on the street..now we see them and we think…I need money like you do!! But just an example of how people would rather give..me and my husband were at a stoplight one day and we saw a guy with a sign saying ” will work for food” and he was right across the street from McDonalds….yea exactly…but 3 out of the 6 cars gave money to this guy…then later that same week we were at that same light and it was a guy that was taking donations because he was a recovering alcoholic and no one was giving money to help so I let my window down and gave some money I had to donate..someone is trying to better their life and we cant help them but we are willing to give to someone who is more then likely going to buy drugs or alcohol with it…To close, I hope with a new year comes better opportunity, money, happiness, and less debt.. I wish you all the best in this new year because we all need it!!!

    Happy New Year
    Bianca

We sure could use another rebate check, after all the taxes that is taken from our checks every two weeks. The money is ours anyway. I feel we are paying to much money for food, rent, and mortgage. If it not one thing its another. it all a vishous circle.

I am a senior citizen who lives with my cat. It is soo hard to keep up. Food bill is too high, and oil is outragious. There is nothing left after my soc sec check is spent on only the necessities. What has happened to this country? Hope some help is on the way. Worrying like this is not good for my health.

  37. Todd Goodale on January 14th, 2009 11:51 am

Well, I agree that everyone could use another stimulus check, and I will gladly accept one also ! How much is it actually going to take to get our economy back on it’s feet though ? Is one thousand, …. five thousand, …… or even ten thousand per family going o do it ? I think that if our government did the same thing that Australia did years ago, we would be booming again in only months ! Australia’s government reset all secured, an unsecured loans, so that everyone’s debt was cleared. Their economy was restored in months, and has been great eve since. Why bail out banks if they are just going to hold onto th money they get, and not help anyone out ? The same goes for auto makers …… Even though they get bailed out, can we afford to go out and buy a new car ? Ummmm ….. NO. Our government needs to look at this as an option, and act on it before the economy takes such a fall, that it can never recover. Hopfully, the Lord comes back before I hve to worry about losing everything I own ! God Bless All.

  38. Michele in Florida on January 18th, 2009 7:24 pm

The other day a politician on CNBC was interviewed and asked why they don’t give the equivalent of the bailout to the taxpayers which would be around $200k. He said because “when they got the last $300 they all saved it and it didn’t help the economy at all.” What a joke! Like the first bail out to the banks did anything?!? If they are so afraid we are going to save it, why don’t they give it to us in prepaid VISA cards that could only be used to pay off our mortgages, buy realestate, pay car loans, buy new cars and pay off credit cards. That would take a big load off of me and I would spend my other measley income on “stuff” to energize the economy. The whining financial institutions and auto industrie would get money. Everyone would win. The millions of people that have been foreclosed on will never be able to buy homes unless they have cash, so this would help them. They could purchase bank owned homes that are decreasing the value of everyone elses home. The number of foreclosures would slow down or stop. I feel like we are all on the Titanic with no rescue boats in sight because all the bankers and politicians took them and they have no idea where the hell the shore is.

  39. Matthew on January 20th, 2009 1:27 am

I think that most of you, just like myself, are in the right mindset that the country does need to do something to stimulate the economy. However, what one person said above was that companies are doing too much to “nickel and dime” us. Banks charging overdraft fees, late fees, etc. That’s the stupid garbage that’s hurting us. People that got their last year stimulus check, even if they spend it on gas bills, or on mortgage payments, they’re still dumping it back into the economy. Doesn’t anyone realize this? Granted, I wish I could have taken my refund and stimulus check, gone out and bought stuff to help “stimulate” the economy, but I needed to do things like purchase groceries, pay my car insurance and the like. No matter how it’s spent, it’s still helping the economy, even if just a little bit. Let’s all keep that in mind. I know that people are struggling, but sometimes even in hard times, you need to do something to make things seem like you’re making progress. Get yourself something small. Take your kids out to eat. Even just a couple bucks can help our economy, and also give you somewhat a sense of self satisfaction. When I got laid off two years ago, and had to cash in my 401k to live, I told myself I’ll be damned if I don’t purchase something for me out of this. Lot of hard work went into putting it together, I better see at least a small advance out of all of that. New stereo. You know, every little bit helps. People, spend your money how you want it. You’re still spending it, and by doing so, helping the economy.

  40. Momof1Boy on January 20th, 2009 4:59 pm

My husband and I probably made around 60k in 2008. We had a brand new baby in Sept. I m happy to see lower gas prices and am wishing food prices would come down as well. I could really use the money that I didn’t get from Short term disability because I didn’t submit the paper work within 30 days(I didn’t know I had a timeline and our office didn’t provide me with the information a co-worker did) So, instead of getting back around $900 I got back $92.00 how depressing. Luckily we hs money saved up. Why can’t we be like other countries. Free healthcare and education. It doesn’t seen like Canada or Europe are having n economic crisis . I m 22 years old, married for 3 years and own my own property in Maryland. Maryland being a really expensive state to live in. I could see how 1200 dollars would help someone in Arizona where the cost of living wasn’t so high, but here in maryland 1200 dollars wouldn’t pay for my mortgage payment on my interest only 100% down fixed rate mortgage. I am staying afloat barley hanging on. Hopefully no one gets sick, a car doesn’t die, or need a new ac unit or I will be under! Some advice I could give to people: Do not use credit cards, remember you have to pay them back eventually. Pay yourself first!!! Take $20.00 out of every check and put it in an envelope in your house watch that envelope grow and grow you will strive to keep watching it! Save your change. In three years we watched our change grow to about $700!! Set goals, feel proud to achieve them! Any way, what my question is how much should one really have in savings? One month, three months, a year??? My mom was a business owner for 11 years. Last year she had to close her doors. She had 50k from her 401k that she had to withdrawl along with 40k from somewhere else. Now being unemployed for almost a year she hs gone through most of that money. She also had a rental property that is about to be bank owned and her credit which has been perfect is now going down the drain. What can they do to help people like her??? She basically has to start all over. She can no longer buy a house or a car or god forbid a credit card. Terrible!! O and she was eligible for stimulus, but the state took it for back taxes.

Who doesn’t need help with the exception of course for actors, models, Bill Gates, and all those people that have more money than they know what to do with? The government in my opinion is kinda giving us false hope because okay yeah they give us a check in hopes of having us buy more stuff but yet at the same time allow all these companies to ship off all our jobs to foreign countries. So in reality its not really doing anything different because for the many of us that don’t have jobs anymore because of our companies trying to save a buck, and we still have to pay bills just get into huge debts. Then the government sends us a check hoping that we’ll go out and buy a flat screen tv or a new stereo for our car that might be reclaimed by the bank in a couple months. In my personal opinion, okay send us a check to help us get on our feet again but give us our jobs back so that we won’t HAVE to rely on the government to give us checks once a year. Its actually just like the pilgrims, okay they were starving so the natives TAUGHT them how to grow their own food, in other words they gave them the ABILITY to take care of themselves. In this generation we are the pilgrims that are starving and the government are the natives that need to give us the ability to support ourselves not just leave us stranded for a whole year then give us a “small” break one day out of the entire year. The government needs to create and enforce laws on companies at the very least limiting what jobs and how many jobs they can send oversees because while the CEO and executives are getting richer from not having to pay their employees as much, the original employees that worked their asses(excuse my language) off to get the company up and running and kept it going are now suddenly kicked to the curb. Its almost like we do all the work and get no thanks whatsoever.

I truly believe that a second check would be a dream come true for lots of people it sounds silly but our whole world is falling apart right in front of us i work 2 jobs and have not even a dollar to myself to but anything but all my bills are paid so of course i would take that $1000 and go shopping i believe everyone would what better way to make everyone happy than that

  44. Amy on January 27th, 2009 8:01 pm

What is wrong with all of you people? Where do you think the money comes from for these “tax rebates”? If you really want to help the economy you cut the taxes that people pay. Leave them to manage their own hard earned money. Cut all the social programs that make this society dependent on it’s government and they would be able to take less of your money. It isn’t the governments job to take care of you, it’s your job to take care of you. Now Obama wants to “redistribute wealth” with his tax credits to people who don’t even pay taxes!! How do you get a credit if you haven’t even paid in. This is a socialist handout and it makes me sick to see this great country going in this direction.

  45. lisa on January 29th, 2009 6:02 pm

Would this possible stimulas check be based on taxes filed last year or the current tax season 2009. I really hope it will be based on last years information. I hope you have come information.

  46. Chris on February 3rd, 2009 1:39 am

Amy, this is in response to your comment: I would LOVE to have the taxes cut on my paycheck—-IF I still got a paycheck!! My job was eliminated 6 mos ago, so how would you suggest that a single person, like myself, manage my money?
Evidently you still have a job, and I think that’s great, but a lot of people don’t and, unfortunately, we do need some help. I live in an area where the unemployment was low until last summer, but that’s no longer the case. SOMETHING is going to have to be done to help stimulate this economy.

  47. John on February 5th, 2009 9:27 pm

First of all, fire the executives of all companies being mismanaged, and replace them with temporary government oversight for 6 months to a year. Second, eliminate the egregious retirement and salaries for these miscreants who leave companies in ruin and the taxpayers holding the bag. Thirdly, seize assets of those individuals like the late Enron CEO Kenneth Lay, and sell at market value to recover losses. Make these people pay for their own errors. And lastly, how about we all stop being so greedy, yes a helping hand would be great, but a house isn’t worth what they cost, nor are cars, nor much else, it’s mostly wages driving up costs, so take pay cuts, but start at the top and work downward; not from the bottom up.

I feel bad for the people who have lost jobs during this downturn. My husband is one of them. We are struggling to pay the bills just like everyone else. This does not change my belief that people need to be responsible for themselves. Save your money instead spending. When a bank or mortgage company wants to lend you $300,000 to buy a home have enough common sense to know you can only afford $200,000. Buy a used car instead of having to have a new one if that is all you can afford. People in this country have a sense of entitlement, if I lose my job someone should give me something….how bout you go get a job somewhere else. If my husband has to take a job at McDonalds, or cleaning toilets or something else he feels is beneath him so be it, at least he is contributing in some way. Maybe you have to get rid of cable or your cell phones, all the things we think are necessary but really aren’t. I’m trimming the fat at my house because that is what you have to do when times are tough. And let’s not forget about unemployment insurance. You have six months (or is it even more now) to find something else to do while you are collecting it. I know a ton of people who feel they can just sit on their butt and collect unemployment, use it like a vacation when what you should be doing is trying to find a job. There are jobs out there to be had, just maybe not what you want, making what you used to make. I agree that the economy sucks right now, but have a little perspective. No one is starving (and if they are it is because they aren’t getting out there and signing up for all the social programs my taxes already pay for).

I’m sorry if this sounds cold or unfeeling but what it comes down to is making adult decisions and taking responsibility.

I agree with most of what John said as well except the government oversight. Historically once government gets there hands in something it is very difficult for them to get out. Big government is what has caused a lot of these problems. The housing market for example…had government not mandated changes that made banks and mortgage companies lower their standards for lending we wouldn’t have all the subprime lending that went on.

  49. Kevin on February 9th, 2009 10:58 am

Wow, The gov’t should do, do this do that, Give me a break…. If WE the peole didn’t get ourselves over extended and live beyong our means then We the people wouldn’t be in this mess. Come on, own up to being at least responsible for signing the papers that said YES I want that!, I an’t afford it but I want it. GREED, that’s also the problem with We the people. LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS. Foods expensive for our three little kids, ( but each one has a sony playstation or the like) The government needs to help us ?????? WTF you want the govt to teall you to wipe your butt too?

I just saw $600.00 is not enough, OK well how about NOTHING? This money ISN”T FREE your kids and their kids will be paying for this through their taxes. Once the US is completely a socialist country, nwe the people will be complaining about that too.

Gas expensive ? DRIVE LESS, think before you go out to drive around. HAVE A PLAN

Do all your kids need cell phones? NO get rid of them.

Give up the conveniences for a while, after all WE signed the papers to pay for this stuff.

OH lost your job? I understand, But did you have an emergency savings account? NO? WHY NOT? psp’s video games, drinking, smoking, fastfood, ALL ADD UP PEOPLE

    BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOURSELF

  50. Lyn on February 9th, 2009 2:06 pm

I don’t understand why everyone is whining about the stimulus monies. FIRST…. this is money you never had, were never promised until 2008, and you whine and complain about it! If the government is offering you a little money to help out the economy, take it, use it for whatever you need it for. That is something they DID take into considerstion, so if they are complaining that we didn’t put it towards the “economy” then that is their fault! The American people are greedy! People only think about themselves and what they want, but that is a part of being human and if the government really wants us to help the economy, they ALREADY KNOW that they need to give us more money! They were testing the waters maybe to get an idea of how much they really need to give out, maybe to tease us all… Hello…. this is the government… But my point here is… it is money you didnt have in the first place! Money that was GIVEN to you for FREE, that you can do WHATEVER you want with, and everyone needs to quit whining about it! We all know our own financial situations, most (not all but most) of us put ourselves in these situations in the first place! buying a house we really couldn’t afford, taking out loans that we really can’t repay…. and if you did that and lost your job, I am terribly sorry, you are in a bad situation. Most loans these days come with an insurance policy thing that if you lose your job they will help you in some way…. yeah I bet some of you are thinking… wow… I forgot about that.. I should have taken advantage of that! But that is hat I mean, you put yourselves in these situations. I have debt, lots to be exact. We are a family of 4 and live off 1 income and most of the paycheck goes to bills, heck, I have a $600 monthly car payment, why… bad credit got us a crappy deal, but we adjust and make due… we get by, not much fun, but you don’t have to “WASTE” money to have fun. Take the kids to the park and play with them. Get a whole bunch of kids, yours and their friends and host a movie night for them! We don’t spend enough time with our kids anymore America! Yeah school and sports are great, but what do you do WITH your kids on the weekends?? Money isn’t everything, and that is something this Great Nation has forgotten! Go back 20 years. We didn’t have nearly half the stuff we do now. You wanted to listen to music while you went walking.. you either carried your radio or a walk-man. Those cost what? $10-15, and now… iPods…. $200+. Get real! I have an MP3, but it only holds like 20 songs and it cost me $10! no cords, plugs right into my computer!

Get rid of your credit cards and pay back your debts! I bet if you use your tax money to pay off debt every year, instead of indulging in some fantasy like owning a big screen, expensive TV, you would eventually get out of debt and be able to save money to buy these things and not have to worry about what bills you have to pay when you get paid, and which ones can go a little longer without being paid… well that happens too much and it makes you use credit cards more often, and you get further and further into debt!

I wish people could understand that the economy is where it is because of us! It is up to us to help when we can by getting ourselves out of debt as soon as possible! Good Luck everyone. Now it is up to you to do your part! If this pisses some of you off…. well I don’t care.. the truth is the truth! Don’t complain and post things to me.. it was a chance I was on this site, most likely will NEVER be back!
    God Bless!

  51. Charlie on February 12th, 2009 12:40 pm

We need a lot of money pumped into mainstreet, USA sucks because of too much credit available and thats the cause of all this mess. Artificial spending power: Try to start leaving within your means (so for me) and none of this would have taken place.

  52. Kelly on February 16th, 2009 9:06 am

Kevin, I am a single mother who works 2 jobs, goes to school FULLTIME and have NOTHING extra to put into the bank. In a few years yeah then I may have a good enough job to do that, but for now I CAN’T. Just because some of you make enough to save some doesnt mean we all do. BE responsible for yourself you say…. HELLO how much more responsible could I POSSIBLY be… I took it personally when you say that. I work and struggle day-to-day.. and if I was hoping that the GOVERNMENT was going to give a bit more to the people who are not lucky enough to have that “great paying job” WELL THEN LET US WISH!
Think the people who would have been eligable for the stimulus were people who WORKED! people who PAY TAXES! come on!!

  53. Amy on February 22nd, 2009 1:47 pm

Thanks Kevin, I was starting to think there wasn’t anyone else out there with any common sense or values left.

I’m not sure everyone here understands where the government gets the money it’s spending. It comes from us, each and everyone of us who pays taxes. Cut your income tax Kelly and you have more money in your pocket. The problem now is that there isn’t enough money coming in to pay for all this so what does the government do? Borrow, borrow, borrow… if they can find someone to lend to us. This is a terrible legacy to leave for our children and grandchildren who will be responsible for this enormous debt. And even worse, if they can’t borrow it we’ll probably just start printing more money. When you are paying $10 for a loaf of bread in a year or two be sure to thank everyone you know who voted for Obama. I can’t believe anyone wants to relive the Carter years but that is where we are headed.

  54. anonymous on February 26th, 2009 2:00 pm

The money you receive is to go back it to the economy your suppose to get and spend it its not to help the American families out its to help the American government out the goverment has to get straightened out before they can start helping us out

  55. Angie on February 26th, 2009 6:10 pm

Well, Id like to include NOT everyone is getting this money examples are that disabled children on ssi are going to see the payment, where children on survivors benifits arent, so they are being particular to who they see capable of stimulating this economy. Work first includes a bonus to what you will recieve back etc etc. So there are a select few going to qualify so ITS not in everyones hands but yet ones not recieving will be paying back for who didnt meet the standard to stimulate the ecomomy. but theyll be paying it back all the same over time. This plan as I see it wont recover a thing, and the stimulus package is extremely flawed.

i so agree with every one my family needs it my dad has no money. he cant pay the bills at all. it sux!!! big time

  57. billie on May 26th, 2009 2:22 pm

i think we all could use the money right about now!!! to me i feel that all that is in the gov. office needs to be paid what we are being paid and raise THE WORKING MAN’S salery!!!! hell if it was not 4 little people like us making the stuff then we would not have it. we are the 1’s that do the hard labor jobs. all they are doing is sitting behind a desk and messing the country up. if they want to make the county better, ask us THE AMERICAN PEOPLE what we want.
