Avoid Stimulus Rebate Scams

May 9, 2008

So as usual, along with the good of the 2008 Rebate Stimulus, so comes the bad. Including those that want to swindle your money from you.

I have been reading about an email scam that looks similiar to the following:

Over 130 million Americans will receive refunds as part of President Bush program to jumpstart the economy.

Our records indicate that you are qualified to receive the 2008 Economic Stimulus Refund.

The fastest and easiest way to receive your refund is by direct deposit to your checking/savings account.

Please follow the link and fill out the form and submit before May 10th, 2008 to ensure that your refund will be processed as soon as possible.

Submitting your form on May 10th, 2008 or later means that your refund will be delayed due to the volume of requests we anticipate for the Economic Stimulus Refund.

To access Economic Stimulus refund, please click here

This is a ploy to get you to enter your bank account info so that some one can use that information to start debiting money out of your account. Don’t ever enter personal information through anything that you have received via email. Even if the link in the email looks correct.

Always enter the url by hand into the browser, such as www.irs.gov as an example. These scammers wouldn’t still be doing scams like this if people weren’t falling for it, so be smart and if you have questions about emails that you get, contact the instution by phone first and verify that the email was valid.

Another Woot Off!

May 8, 2008

Woot.com is having another of its Woot Offs right now. It started around midnight central time and will go until they run out of stuff.  If you are unfamiliar with Woot.com, they are a site that offers items at a discount. Usually only one item is listed per day starting at 12am Central Time and is listed until it is sold out or 11:59PM Central Time. A Woot Off, which happens rarely, is a number of products that are for sale on a particular day or successive days. One product follows another as soon as it has been sold out. The number of Woot-Off items, sequence, and quantity will not be announced so an item could take a while to sell out or sell out immediately. Don’t miss a chance to score some items at a steal if you have some money to blow! But remember, that I prefer you really think about saving it. ;)

$2.99 per Gallon of Gas for the Next 3 Years

May 8, 2008

Chrysler, in an effort to sell more gas guzzling SUVs is giving away 3 years of gas at $2.99 per gallon for three years when you purchase or lease an eligible Chrysler vehicle from May 7 through June 2, 2008 and have a valid MasterCard or Visa credit card or check card.

Here is how it works:

  • When you buy a qualifying new 2008 (Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep vehicle) you tell then the Visa or MasterCard credit card you use to pay for your gas.
  • They issue you a Let’s Refuel America card that you will use to buy gas in each of the next three years.
  • Each time you buy fuel with that card, your credit card will never be charged more than $2.99/gallon – no matter what the pump price may be.

Sounds too good to be true, of course. Even though they say 3 years of gas, there is a maximim gallon limit depending on the vehicle you buy. See their Press Release for the maximum gallons per model info.

In the end you can figure that gas will be around $4.00, so this will save you around $1, times the number of gallons max which from the looks of it can range from $1500 – $2400. Now if gas falls below $2.99 then you aren’t really getting much back. So if you are long on the price of oil, this might be the deal for you!!!

Sometimes I wish that rather than offer these crazy promo’s, American Car Makers would focus their time and energey on producing higher gas mileage cars and trucks, which in the end would sell more cars!

Check The Status of Your 2008 Tax Rebate

May 6, 2008

The IRS has released a new tool that lets you check on the status of your 2008 tax rebate. For those of you that thought you should have received your rebate but didn’t, you definitely need to try this.

Click Here for the IRS Rebate Status Tool

You will need three things from your tax return to use this tool:

  • Your Social Security Number
  • Your Filing Status
  • The number of Exemptions (Note: This is not the number of deductions)

Make sure you are accurate with these as I noticed that incorrectly putting in the number of exemptions on mine yielded an error. So if you get an error, double check a copy of the return you submitted.

Note that specific information about your Stimulus Payment will not be available until about one week before the payment is scheduled to be issued.

However if you think you should have already received yours based on the payment schedule, this tool should help.

Here is an example of mine so you can get an idea of what data you will see:

Hopefully this will answer a lot of your questions.
